OpenLearning.com, a leading Australian provider of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), has picked up AUD$1.7 million in funds to expand its footprint into Asia.

The company has finalised funding from the Australian software entrepreneur, Clive Mayhew. He leads the OpenLearning investment with $1 million in funds. Other investment partners include ICS Global, Benesse Holdings and efu Investment.

Under its regional expansion, OpenLearning will build its engineering curriculum and leverage an established brand in Malaysia. It is the official MOOCs platform provider for public higher education in Malaysia and will also expand into China.

More than 125,000 students from 200 countries have taken over 500 courses via the OpenLearning platform. The company aims to secure one million users by year’s end.

OpenLearning is building its digital education base around the development of mobile apps, creation of online content, highly-interactive student engagement and the more intuitive learning models.

Earlier, this company was supported by muru-D, a start-up accelerator with backing by Telstra. Telstra supports entrepreneurial talent in Australia and internationally through educational alliances and partnerships.
